How to Start a Blog: The Beginner’s Guide

First and foremost, I want to say this: starting my blog was one of the best things I ever did! It has given me a creative outlet to share the wide variety of things I'm passionate about, including my forever love for beauty! Not only that, but I'm my own boss. Everything I post or do goes through me and only me. But thankfully, I haven't been completely left to figure everything out on my own. I've received a ton of tips and tricks from the amazing bloggers and influencers in the St. Louis area, as well as virtually on social media. Youtube has also been a helpful resource. And for that reason, I want to provide the same kind of guidance to you.

Have you ever wanted to start a blog?

Of course you have, which is exactly why you're reading this blog post!

But, there must be a reason that you haven't started yet. And chances are, I have had those same doubts, uncertainty, and insecurities. So, let's talk about them!

MYTH #1: "I'm not good enough."

FALSE! You are more than good enough to start a blog. In fact, you are great! And the worst thing you can do is NOT start. Accept this new challenge and be more than good enough!

MYTH #2: "I have to be an Instagram Model."

BULLSH*T! You really think I'm an Instagram Model? Let's all laugh together... But seriously, this is the biggest myth of all! The key is to always be authentic and post what makes you happy.

MYTH #3: "People will judge me."

NOPE! At the end of the day, people don't really care what you do. And the ones that actually do care are the same ones who are sending you supportive messages and reading your blog posts.

MYTH #4: "If you're not getting paid, it's not worth it."

WRONG! If your goal is to get paid— great! But, don't make that the only reason you start your blog. Do it because you want to share your passion about something. Rule: passion first, money after.

Now that we've put those to rest, let's talk about starting your blog. I'll use me as an example.

Step 1: Topic & Target Audience

To start, know your topic, niche, and target audience. First of all, my topic is primarily about beauty, however, I enjoy writing about my life and fashion as secondary. My niche is easy, everyday hair maintenance and styles for the target audience of busy, hardworking professional women in their 20s. When you think of your target audience as a person, it's even easier to relate to the overall group.

Step 2: Choosing Your Blog Name

Once you know your "thing," you need to choose a name. For me, it was simple. When I was younger, I'd pretend I was working at a salon and "style" my mom's hair. We'd always call it Holly's House of Hair. And unsurprisingly,  many others also used that name for their real life salons. So, of course, I had to change it up a bit with Holly's Home of Hair. It even sounds better. Win-win!

Step 3: Find Your Hosting Site

The two best hosting sites, in my opinion, are Bluehost and WP Engine. Find a more in-depth comparison here. Moral of the story, Bluehost is probably the one you want to go with. It's $2.95/month and comes with a free domain name, free SSL certificate, 1-click Wordpress install, 24-7 support. It's also super simple to use for first-time website creators, like myself.

Step 4: Pick Your Theme

Using Bluehost, you can easily create a Wordpress account for themes. There are over 11,000 themes to choose from, which means it's likely that you will find one that works for you. For my theme, I chose Hestia from Themeisle, and it works seamlessly with Wordpress. If you know how to create custom code, power to ya! But if not, Youtube will be the best teacher.

Step 5: Create Your First Blog Post

When creating your first post, keep these tips in mind: always be knowledgable, useful, and unique. Readers are attracted to right now news, so come up with a fresh perspective that contributes to the larger subject. And chances are, you will probably hate your first blog post many months down the line. But, that means your blogs will just keep getting better and better. Soon, you'll be an expert!

This is the most simple and basic guide for how to start a blog. Stay tuned for upcoming posts in the future that have more in-depth instructions. For now, I hope this helps! Feel free to reach out here with any questions you have in the process.

As always, stay beautiful. ❤️
